There’s still time to sign up for the Caerphilly Challenge Series, which is set to take place on Saturday 10th May.
The Caerphilly Challenge Series involves a series of walks of various lengths, which will this year begin at Rhymney Comprehensive School. Walkers of all abilities are invited to join as there is a challenge to suit everyone – ranging from the “Lets Walk Challenge”, a led 1-5 mile walk, to the Wild Boar Challenge, a self-led challenge where participants can run, jog or walk the 14 or 22 mile routes. Ramblers Cymru are also leading a 9 mile walk as part of the Challenge Series.
Visitors can sign up for the “Lets Walk Challenge” on the day for free, but anyone interested in participating in the Ramblers Cymru walk or the Wild Boar Challenge must sign up before Tuesday 22nd April. These longer walks are £10 per person. Under 18ss receive a £2 discount, but participants must be over 12 years old and accompanied by an adult to take part.
Deborah and Brian Gibne travelled all the way from Galway in Ireland last year to take part in the Challenge and they are already gearing up for this year’s walk. Deborah said: “We really enjoyed taking part in the 16 mile walk of last year’s Caerphilly Challenge Series, so much so that we have decided to come back again and push the boat out by stepping up to the 22 mile Wild Boar. Our training hasn’t been too hectic to date, but we are both planning on knuckling down for the next eight weeks to get the extra miles in the legs before the 10th of May. We had a fantastic day last year and we are really looking forward to another one in May!”
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development said: “The Caerphilly Challenge Series is a great way to get active – residents can take part whatever their ability and can have a great day exploring the wonderful countryside we have on our doorstep.”
