Talented Pupils Are Going Solo

Talented singers and musicians have appeared in a county-wide competition as part of a popular opportunity offered by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Music Service.

Going Solo is now in its sixth year and offers all primary and secondary school pupils the opportunity to sing or play a musical instrument of their choice.

They competed amongst each other at Pontypridd High earlier this month, with the winners perform ing at the Music Service Concert, alongside the Junior and Transition Youth Orchestra s and other County groups at the Muni earlier this week.

Going Solo is a popular opportunity offered by the Music Service. All primary and secondary schools in the county borough are offered the opportunity to send pupils to weekly workshops to prepare for the competition.

The winners who went on to perform in the concert were:

Junior Instrumental:
Angharad Davies from YGGG Llantrisant, who played the violin.

Intermediate Instrumental: Jack Davidson of Pontypridd High, who played the guitar

Senior Instrumental: Jointly won by Daniel Richards, his sister Hayley Richards and Nathan Price, all of whom are from Hawthorn High and all of whom played the electric guitar.

Junior vocalist: Emily Jones of Aberdare Park Primary.

Intermediate vocalist: Joe Sendal of Treorchy Comprehensive

Senior Vocalist: Sophie Gregory of Treorchy Comprehensive.

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, said: “Well done to all the extremely talented young people from across our county borough who did so well in Going Solo.

“This is an annual event that remains popular, as it celebrates its sixth year. We know there is a wealth of talent among our younger residents and we are so pleased to be able to offer a wide range of activities that allow them to shine.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Music Service offers a range of free initiatives for young people, including Junior Brass Band, Children’s Choir, Youth Chorus, Youth Orchestra, Samba, Jazz Band and much, much more!
