Taste of Wales for European Education Visitors

A group of education practitioners from across Europe will be visiting Cardiff next week to exchange ideas and best practice.

Mike O’Donovan, headteacher of Glyncoed Junior School in Pentwyn, will be hosting visitors from Turkey, Germany, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and Poland for a study visit between April 11 and 15 as part of the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training’s EU Lifelong Learning Programme.

Mr O’Donovan will be accompanying his 14 guests on a packed schedule of visits to local schools and attractions. The group will be treated to a welcome assembly at Glyncoed at the start of the week and will also visit Llanishen High School to find out more about philosophy for children, Moorland Primary School to learn about the Foundation Phase, Mount Stuart Primary School where the group will observe lessons and Grangetown Nursery to see the school’s Forest School.

The visitors will also be getting a real taste of Wales during their stay with a trip to the National History Museum at St Fagans where they will have a tour of the historical buildings and a Victorian school lesson.  The group will also spend time in Cardiff Bay, at the Senedd, have a chance to look around the city centre and Cardiff Castle’s educational facilities.

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde, will host the European guests at a special lunch at the Mansion House during their stay.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for schools in Cardiff to show our European visitors some of the fantastic work going on in the city. I know that the group will receive a warm welcome during their stay. I sincerely hope they enjoy our beautiful city and will find their visit beneficial.”

Headteacher Mike O’Donovan said: “I’m delighted to be able to showcase some of the excellent practice happening in Cardiff Schools to our European partners, and I would encourage Cardiff teachers to apply to participate in a study visit to a European country as I believe it’s very worthwhile to continuous professional development.”
