Tea break is hair-raising success

Bacon butties, mini manicures and apple bobbing were just some of the ways that ILS students at Pontypool Campus raised £235 for Epilepsy Action last week as part of their ‘Charity Teabreak’.  Staff and students relaxed and enjoyed tea and cake, but it was a little less of a relaxing time for two members of staff, Ian Scandrett and Nathan Strager who showed they were men rather than mice and volunteered to have their legs waxed for the good cause.

The pair tried to hide their grimaces as beauty staff ‘de-fuzzed’ their legs, much to the delight of student onlookers.

21-year-old Nathan from St Julian, when asked how painful it was, responded with an ‘argh!’ as another wax stripped was ripped off his, by now red, lower leg, followed by:  “Very!  It hurts more in certain places but it’s definitely worth it for such a good cause.”

But Ian, 20, from Blaenavon, is certainly a glutton for punishment as he’s no stranger to the world of waxing:  “I’ve had part of my leg waxed for charity before, but never all of it like this.  And it’s always as painful as you think it’s going to be but it’s a great opportunity to do my bit to raise money.”

Tutor Sherrie Copleston-Harris was pleased with how the event went:  “It was great to see staff and students attending and getting involved for the charity, it went really well.  The students worked hard to make it work and all of them enjoyed it.  And I’d like to thank the beauty students and staff who offered some lovely treatments.

“After one member of the group died last month, at the age of 18, after suffering the condition, and another student recently undergoing major brain surgery because of his epilepsy, the students thought it a fitting tribute to donate the money they raise to Epilepsy Action – a cause close to their hearts.”
