Teaching staff receive award for supporting children’s speech and language in the classroom

A group of Flintshire head teachers, teachers and support workers have each been presented with an award for supporting children’s speech and language development in the classroom, in a ceremony at Nant Mawr Centre, Buckley.

The group of eleven received certificates for passing the Open College Network accredited

‘Speech and Language Support in the Classroom’, a course developed by ELKLAN*. The course aims to increase knowledge of speech and language development, the difficulties children can encounter when developing their communication, and how best to support a child who does have these difficulties.

The group who received certificates is:

Yvonne Barker, Joanne Cumming, Shelley Dorbin, Beth Jones, Kate McGlade, Rachel Molyneux, Jane Parry, Marianne Powell, Sophie Reynolds, Karen Roberts, and Rachel Roberts.

The course was a joint initiative, funded and delivered by BCUHB Speech and Language Therapy Department, Flintshire County Council and Afasic.

The certificates were presented by Jeanette Rock, the County’s Principal Learning Advisor for Inclusion, and Yvonne Brooks, AFASIC North Wales Development Officer.

Jeanette Rock said:

“This course has been a great success, and all those involved were able to immediately use their new knowledge and skills within their classrooms and schools to the benefit of the pupils.

“This has been a fantastic achievement for all concerned, and one which ultimately aims to support children in getting the most from their education.”
