Tennis success for south Powys primary schools

Four primary schools from south Powys have taken part in an inaugural tennis tournament.

Pupils from Llangyndir Primary School, Ysgol-y-Bannau, Beguildy and Glasbury-on-Wye Church in Wales schools competed in the South Powys Primary Schools Tennis Tournament held at Builth Wells Sports Centre.

Llangynidr won both the mixed and girls team competition but lost the closely contested boys to Ysgol-y-Bannau with defeats in both doubles matches proving decisive.

Beguildy and Glasbury finished runners-up in the girls and mixed competition respectively.

Each team consisted of four players and the competition was run as a round robin. Players were required to play timed singles matches of 10 minutes against their opposite number and a timed doubled match also of 10 minutes.

The three winning teams will now represent south Powys in the South Wales Finals at Cardiff’s David Lloyd Centre on Thursday 17 June.

Matt James, Powys County Council’s Physical Activity & Sports Development Officer, said: “We have several outstanding junior tennis players in South Powys and a real tennis hotbed at Crickhowell Tennis Club.

“It’s important that we have a good schools tennis structure in place to complement the work being done by local clubs and coaches and to allow these young players the opportunity to shine.”
