The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Margaret Jones has named Tenovus as this year’s Lord Mayor’s charity.
Announcing her support, Cllr Jones said: “Tenovus is the leading cancer charity in Wales, providing support services to people in the community suffering from the disease. Their Mobile Cancer Support Units travel across Wales delivering chemotherapy and lymphoedema treatments, saving patients often long and stressful journeys to and from hospital.”
“Their unique ways of supporting people affected by cancer include their Sing with Us choirs across Wales which are fun, uplifting and friendly and support over 800 people every week through singing, counselling, as well as the practical support like help with money advice and benefits advice.”
“Furthermore, Tenovus funded researchers are recognised for their pioneering work in developing the use of a drug now used worldwide to treat breast cancer, and another which treats prostate cancer.”
Over the next year the Lord Mayor has pledged to help Tenovus raise their profile, as well as valuable funds by hosting special fundraising events and attending key fixtures in their annual calendar.
Cllr Jones continued: “I look forward to working with the charity representatives on many fundraising events over the future months and I would ask you all to show your support where possible by attending the events planned throughout my mayoral year.”
Tenovus Chief Executive, Claudia McVie, said: “We’re delighted to have been chosen as the Lord Mayor’s charity of the year. Cardiff is where we began over 70 years ago and remains the base for many of our staff and volunteers today.”
“We bring support and treatment to the heart of communities for cancer patients and their families, including right here in Cardiff and we look forward to an exciting year ahead; with lots of exciting activity lined up already, it promises to be fantastic.”
