An official opening of the annual Open Art exhibition at Gwynedd Museum & Art Gallery, Bangor will take place on Friday evening 2 March at 7pm.
Whatever your preference in art, with 119 works on show by 88 different artists, there will surely be something to suit all tastes at the annual open art exhibition. The exhibition will run at Gwynedd Museum & Art Gallery in Bangor between 3 March and 14 April.
This is the 17th consecutive open art exhibition to be held at the Gwynedd Museum & Art Gallery in Bangor which continues to be supported by a wide spectrum of artists from the surrounding area.
A panel of selectors decided on the final exhibition from nearly 200 entries. Several works were considered of equal merit but after due deliberation this year selectors’ prize of £250 went to Martin Morley from Bethesda for his painting in acrylic of ‘Treflan, Bethesda, 1989’.
Delyth Gordon, Gwynedd Council Visual Arts Officer said: “The open art exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for local artists to showcase their work to the public. There is a wide variety of works on show, paintings, printmaking, drawings, photography and some sculpture, which we hope will appeal to all our visitors who are interested in art. All are welcome to enjoy the work and vote for their own favourite.”
A number of art works were awarded recognition of Highly Commended. They are ‘Making Marmalade’ watercolour painting by Jenet Peers, ‘Mining Shed, Parys Mountain‘ oil painting by Gwyn Jones, ‘Water and Wind II’ acrylic on letter carved driftwood by Martin Wenham, ‘Arwel and Friend’ a photograph by Emyr Roberts, ‘Triple Junction’ oil painting by Judith Hay, ‘Narcissus’, acrylic painting by Jane Enright.
Also awarded were; ‘Configuration II’ acrylic painting by Pam Green, ‘Tulip Street’ acrylic painting by Dorothy Williams, ‘Anthropology Trip’ pastel and gouache by Susan Gathercole, ‘Still life with Iron’ pencil drawing and collage by Carolyn Moss-Williams, ‘Almost Ready’ acrylic painting by Arfon Jones, ‘Segur Fydd y Cŷn a’r Morthwyl Mwy’ mixed media work by Teresa Jones, ‘Fabrication Dept.’ mixed media work by Jo Alexander, The Visitors’, watercolour painting by Julie Williams and ‘Mrs Knowles in her Sweetshop’, oil painting by Judith Samuel.
The public get the chance to vote for their favourite art work during the exhibition with a prize of £100, awarded by the Friends of the Museum and Art Gallery and presented to the winner at the end of the exhibition.
A smaller subsequent showing of some of the framed works will be held at Gwynedd Council’s Oriel Pendeitsh Gallery in Caernarfon from 12 May – 8 July.
