Residents in Pontypridd can now enjoy the beautiful surroundings of The Common even more thanks to the Tidy Towns initiative.
Tidy Towns is an initiative between Keep Wales Tidy and all 22 Welsh local authorities, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, which seeks to empower people to take responsibility for their own local environment.
In Rhondda Cynon Taf the Council set up a small team within the Streetcare service to help the community to undertake the much needed work to keep our towns tidy and over the last 3 years the team has helped hundreds of community groups and schools to make the most of their local environment.
Recently The Common in Pontypridd was given a facelift as the team set out to cut back the trees and trim the hedges that have overgrown during the winter months.
Now residents can further enjoy the views and beautiful surrounding the area provides as the trees have been thinned out, creating an enhanced view of Pontypridd and a more pleasant environment.
The team help schools and groups by carrying out various jobs that they are unable to do, including cutting back hedges and overgrowth using specialist equipment as well as building log circles from the debris in local wooded areas, raised flower beds and decking.
The Council’s Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “We welcomed the Tidy Towns initiative in Rhondda Cynon Taf and are pleased that The Common, Pontypridd has benefitted from the scheme.
“Now we hope even more voluntary groups will follow the same example because such projects will be of huge benefit to the entire community.”
