Pupils at a Wrexham school will be given tips on how to prepare healthy meals when the cooking bus comes to town.
The Cooking Bus, funded by the Welsh Government, is at Hafod Y Wern Community Primary School between Monday 30th January – Friday 3rd February 2012 as part of the Focus on Food Campaign. The campaign aims to support the teaching of cooking in schools across the country and enhance and reinforce pupils’ existing knowledge of basic nutrition, food safety and hygiene.
The giant, hi-tech lorry opens out into a spectacular purpose-built kitchen/classroom where qualified food teachers give pupils, parents and the community practical cooking lessons. It also trains teachers so they can continue helping youngsters learn about food and cooking in the classroom.
Specialist staff on the bus will teach Pupils and Teachers how to make and prepare vegetable samosa’s, various soups, fruit kebabs, bruschetta, roasted vegetable couscous salad and much, much more.
The bus will also host a special cookery class for all Teaching Assistants, who will learn how to make dishes such as Chicken Ruby, Sunset Pasta Salad, Lunchbox Wraps and Berry and Lime Refreshers.
The Welsh Government bus is on a tour of schools across the country to help promote cooking to children and to show them that cooking healthy meals is simple.
Over 100 schools have benefitted from Cooking Bus visits since June 2006.
