During the Easter holidays why not come down to the beach at Dinas Dinlle, near Caernarfon, for an Easter egg hunt with a difference. On Tuesday morning, 6 April, between 10am and 12pm you will have the opportunity to take part in a sharks, skates and rays’ “Egg Case Survey” and to see some of the other marine wildlife found on our beaches.
We will be looking for egg cases of the dogfish (a type of shark) as well as those of skates and rays which are often washed up on the shore. Every shark, skate and ray species lay their own unique egg cases so this survey on Dinas Dinlle beach will be a chance to discover which skates and rays live off the coast of Gwynedd.
Laura Jones, Biodiversity Officer for Gwynedd Council said: “We hope to see a wide variety of marine wildlife on the seashore at Dinas Dinlle so it promises to be a really interesting morning.
“We will be focusing on egg cases and hope to have a close look at cases that are often seen in the strandline, having been carried in by recent storms or washed up through the natural action of waves. With the variety of egg cases we come across, we hope to be able to get an idea of the types of skates and rays that are using the sea off the coast of Gwynedd and our findings will also be used in studies at a UK level.”
This event is free and open to all. Remember to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. We will be meeting at the beach car park in Dinas Dinlle (SH436566), near the village of Llandwrog at 10am.
