Christmas shoppers are being urged to think before they splash the cash on gifts.
Swansea Trading Standards is helping consumers to be aware of their rights over the festive period.
Exchanging goods and returning faulty items are all regular occurrences at this time of year and shoppers could get caught out if they don’t check individual store policies before they buy.
John Hague, Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It is important for consumers to be aware of their rights so that informed decisions can be made when buying goods or services.”
David Picken, Divisional Trading Standards in Swansea Council, said: “Most stores will have their own individual shop policy and it’s worth finding out the details of this before making a purchase.
“Christmas can be difficult for shoppers because many people are buying gifts for someone else. Shops have no legal obligation to refund someone just because the present is unwanted or it’s the wrong size or colour.
“The simple message is check before you buy.”
A Consumer Direct campaign is also advising shoppers to apply three simple principles to goods they have purchased.
Are they:
• Of satisfactory quality
• Fit for their purpose
• As described
If not then shoppers are entitled to return the goods.
