Three people caught in strong rip tide at Three Cliffs Bay

On Saturday afternoon (3 July) Horton and Port Eynon RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched to the aid of two people who got into difficulties in a rip tide at Three Cliffs bay South Gower.

Another group member assisted the two back to shore. As the lifeboat crew checked to see that all was well before leaving the area, they were alerted by Swansea Coastguards to another person close by who was snorkelling and also being dragged out to sea by the rip tide.

The lifeboat crew soon found the person and, due to his position in the surf, it was decided that a crew member from the lifeboat would enter the water and help the casualty through the surf back onto the beach as the lifeboat held its position.

Once ashore, he was checked by Horton lifeboat crew and Oxwich Coastguard and, although tired, no other medical assistance was required.

It is advisable to check with the local coastguards, lifeguards or lifeboat stations as to where it is safe to swim. Rip tides are one of the foremost problems for swimmers and surfers.
