Lansdowne Primary School is a good school with good prospects for improvement, according to Estyn inspectors.
The Canton primary school received a visit by the national inspectors in February and in the recently published report is described as a happy school where children make sound progress and achieve good standards.
Inspectors considered the school to be good when answering all three key questions – How good are the outcomes? How good is provision? and How good are leadership and management? The findings of the inspection mean that the school has many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement.
The school’s caring environment and inclusive ethos were noted during the visit and as well as the fact that pupils and staff are proud of their school and enjoy being there. Relationships in the school are described as very positive and based on mutual respect.
The report highlights that standards in speaking and listening are high at Lansdowne and pupils speak confidently and communicate effectively with others. Behaviour is good and attitudes to learning are positive throughout the school.
The hard work of staff and their commitment to their professional responsibilities is also highlighted and that the Headteacher and governing body had successfully led the school and promoted behaviours and values that contributed to a positive school ethos. Inspectors also highlighted that spending decisions related well to priorities for improvement and that the school provides good value for money. The school’s partnership working was praised, having developed valuable relationships with a wide variety of partners in Cardiff to help the school to raise standards and extend the range of activities available to pupils and improve their wellbeing, for example, the school’s strong link with Cardiff City Football Club has had a positive impact on pupils’ standards of health and fitness.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “Congratulations to all at Lansdowne Primary School on their successful Estyn report. Keep up the good work.”
Headteacher Richard Edwards said: “This report reflects the hard work of everyone, all of our practitioners and of course the children themselves. I am extremely proud of their shared achievements.”
