An Assembly candidate has given the thumbs up for a campaign to help vulnerable babies in Wales .
Darren Millar, Welsh Conservative Assembly Candidate for Clwyd West, is supporting a campaign by the charity Bliss to ensure premature and sick babies get the care they need and deserve. Bliss is the charity that helps care for premature and sick babies. They are also dedicated to ensuring that babies survive and go on to have the best possible quality of life.
Darren’s commitment comes at a time when the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is currently reviewing maternity and children’s services across North Wales. The health board has failed to rule out the possibility of the withdrawal of consultant-led services at Glan Clwyd hospital.
When asked to comment Darren said:
“This is a worthy campaign which I am proud to support.
“Around one in every eight babies in Wales is born too soon, too small or too sick and has to be admitted to a neonatal unit. However there is a shortage of nurses and doctors to care for these babies and units are often operating above safe occupancy levels. As a result babies are being unnecessarily transferred long distances for their care, or simply not getting level of dedicated care and attention that they need.
““Over the last year I have been campaigning to protect consultant-led maternity and neonatal services in North Wales which are under threat. This campaign underlines the importance of consultant led maternity services in our local area.”
