Tidy Towns environmental boost for Bangor

The local environment of the Cegin Valley near Bangor will be improved thanks to a cash boost by Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Town’s scheme.

The Council is offering grants to community groups and organisations to improve the natural environment by organising events, undertaking projects and purchasing equipment.

Following on from successful clean-ups locally as part of Bangor Pride projects, Gwynedd Council’s Rural Operations unit and partners have successfully received funding to clear rubbish from the banks of the river Cegin near Porth Penrhyn.

Mark Balaam, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Countryside Warden said:

“The entire valley and the banks of the Cegin have been transformed over the years thanks to the hard work of several agencies but in particular local groups and individuals.

“Signs indicate that the local environment and important biodiversity is recovering and this work will go a long way to ensure that the area remains clean and tidy.”

The tidy towns grant has been made possible by funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s environmental improvement programme and Gwynedd Council is working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.

Tidy Towns grant may be used to support environmental projects such as litter picking and eradicating intrusive weeds, creation of pleasant public spaces, planting flowers, improving access and creation of wildlife gardens, to name just a few.
