As part of a “Focus on Caernarfon” campaign, a multi-agency community clean-up has been held in part of the Peblig ward in Caernarfon. The successful event saw work undertaken in a section of the Peblig ward, including Cae’r Saint, Cil Peblig, Lôn Eilian, Lôn Cefn Du, Lôn Tŷ Gwyn and Hyfrydle and is the first in a series of three events which will see the whole of the ward cleaned up.
This work is a partnership approach initiated by agencies including the Arson Reduction Team, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Gwynedd Council, North Wales Police, Community Payback, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd, Gwynedd Môn Youth Justice Service, Keep Wales Tidy and Communities First. The main aim of this particular day was to work in partnership with the local community to tackle environmental problems within the area, by leaving a marked improvement on conditions within the estate.
The day proved very useful in drawing the community’s attention to many different issues including fire safety, illegal tipping, recycling, crime reduction and housing matters.
Over four tonnes of waste materials, electrical goods and furniture were removed from gardens and other parts of the estate. This significantly reduces the risk of accidental or deliberate fires, prevents fly-tipping and also helps to improve the appearance of the estate.
Iona Thomas, Tidy Towns Officer for Gwynedd Council, one of the organisers, said:
“One of the main aims of the day was to work in partnership with the community to improve local environmental quality and conditions for all who live in the area.”
“We are hoping that this day will encourage the local residents to take responsibility for the local environment and to have a lasting sense of pride in maintaining the appearance of their estate and surroundings, including safe, considerate and legal disposal of waste and litter.”
Melanie Lawton, Arson Reduction Coordinator added:
“We welcome the opportunity to work with our partner to improve community safety and the condition of the environment.”
Erica Jones, Community Development Officer for Peblig Communities First noted:
“I am very pleased that the Peblig Ward has been included as part of the “Focus on Caernarfon”. All the various agencies have worked as one and we now like to enlist even more help from the local community”
Peter Simpson, Gwynedd Council Street Scene Manger said:
“I am very pleased that “Focus on Caernarfon” is now up and running and I am grateful to our partners for making this possible. We have a number of further activities lined up, all aimed at tackling environmental or community safety matters, such as arson, litter, fly-tipping, dog fouling and graffiti. We do hope that this will capture the imagination of the Caernarfon community and encourage them to get involved”
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader, added:
“I’m delighted to see local people and agencies working together to make Gwynedd a good place to live, work and visit. Now that this hard work has been done, I hope that people will continue to respect and take pride in their community and local environment and not allow problems to creep back to this beautiful area.”
Terry Williams, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s county safety manager for Gwynedd concluded:
“One of the main aims of the day was to work in partnership with the community to improve local environmental quality and conditions for all who live in the area.
“Cleaner neighbourhoods lead to safer neighbourhoods and a reduction in anti-social behaviour and crime. We are hoping that this day will encourage the residents of the area to take responsibility for their safety and the environmental condition of their neighbourhood and to take pride in its appearance.”
The day was partly funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Tidy Towns Initiative, which is administered through Gwynedd Council. For further information about the initiative call 01766 771000 or e-mail: [email protected]
