George Povey, of Anwyl Homes, has been named Site Manager of the Year in the Gwynedd Local Authority Building Control Awards.

The 43-year-old father of three is now in the running for a North Wales award at a glittering occasion at the St David’s Park Hotel, Ewloe.

He received the award from the building inspectors who oversee construction developments in Gwynedd after taking charge of an award-winning site at Abersoch and another project at Felinheli.

At Abersoch Anwyl built nine luxury three-storey townhouses in the heart of the town while in Pwllheli a four-storey 17-apartment complex is nearing completion.

George, who originally trained as a civil engineer, has been with Anwyl Homes, part of the Flintshire-based Anwyl Group, for three years.

He said: “The award has been for the work on the two developments which have both gone very well, despite the difficult and very wet weather we have had over the winter in Felinheli.

“It’s been a tough battle at times but we’ve stayed on schedule and everyone who sees the building now thinks it looks great so we’re very pleased with it, it’s fantastic.

“I’ve enjoyed working for Anwyl. They’re a really good company who work to very high standards.”

Alwynne Morris Jones, from Gwynedd Council, said: “We were pleased to nominate George for this award. As a department, we have worked with him on two separate projects where he was extremely efficient and professional.

“As a real people person George is held in high esteem and respect by the workers on site – both main contractors and sub-contractors – for his knowledge of the industry and his eagerness that the work be done correctly as well as his mutual respect of the workforce.”

Mathew Anwyl, Anwyl Homes Director, said: “We’re always delighted to win a Local Authority Building Control award as we consider them a hugely important accolade and a benchmark for the construction industry.

“It’s always nice to have your work recognised and to have it done by the people whose job it is to oversee all the building work that goes on in Gwynedd is very satisfying.

“We do feel it is important to work with the local authority building control departments in North Wales. We have a good working relationship with them which has been built up over the years. You can talk to them about issues and it works very well for both sides.

“We’re also delighted for George and this award is a fitting reward for the outstanding work he has done at Felinheli and Abersoch and since joining the company.”
