It attracts hundreds of fitness fans every year and now the Admiral Swansea Bay 10K has been officially recognised as one of the UK’s best races.
Run Britain has announced that the event will feature as one of only five races in the forthcoming Run Britain Grand Prix Series taking place in 2011.
The series consists of the best British 10k and half marathon races and is open to athletes eligible to compete for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A total prize purse of over £55,000 is available.
Other races forming part of the series will take place in Reading, Bristol, London and Birmingham.
The inclusion of the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k in the Grand Prix Series is the latest in a list of accolades for the event. It’s also been named sixth best race in the UK for trying to beat your personal best by the readers of Runner’s World magazine.
Swansea Council is behind event.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “With over 2,600 road races in the UK in 2011 it’s tremendous news for the city that the Admiral Swansea Bay 10K has again been officially recognised as one of the leading road races in Britain.
“The inclusion of the event in this prestigious series will not only help raise the profile of Swansea but will also re-establish the race as one of the most iconic of its kind.”
Steve Brace, Head of Athletics Development with Welsh Athletics, said: “We’re delighted that the Admiral Swansea Bay 10K will be part of this exciting new initiative.
“This re-affirms Swansea and Wales in the forefront of the development of endurance running and will help improve the performance of athletes, raise the profile of the sport and encourage greater participation.”
