Visitors to Wepre Park have given the local attraction a top rating on TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website.
Excellent reviews have meant the Connah’s Quay country park has received the website’s Certificate of Excellence 2014 and a four and a half star rating.
One attraction that is flourishing at Wepre is the Great Crested Newt soil sculpture. Created last year by countryside ranger Tim Johnson with the help of local contractor Arwyn Parry, the larger than life newt was sculpted from left over soil from a drainage project.
The rangers decided on a newt as Wepre Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the endangered species. Wildflower seeds planted in the soil sculpture have matured and the newt is blooming with poppies, cornflowers and ox-eye daisies. It can be found near the top football pitch, at the front of the park.
Councillor Bernie Attridge, Cabinet Member for Environment said: “The sculpture has moved on from last year when it looked impressive just as soil. Now the plants have grown it’s a haven of wildflowers and well worth a visit. The TripAdvisor rating is proof that we have some great attractions in Flintshire worth talking about!”
