The countdown is on to the Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain, when 96 elite cyclists will speed through the streets of Caerphilly county borough.
To help make the occasion that little bit more special, Caerphilly County Borough Council have teamed up with Welsh Cycling to run an exciting competition for local schools on the stage’s finish straight, before welcoming the professionals as they sprint across the line to finish stage four of this year’s tour.
Six local primary schools will participate in an ‘Italian Pursuit’ competition at the event on Wednesday 14th September, where each team relays its athletes for a short lap on the finish straight.
The Italian Pursuit competition is being run on the finish of each stage for this year’s Tour of Britain, so Caerphilly County Borough youngsters will be able to compare their times against schools from other host locations!
Schools participating in the competition are Bedwas Juniors, Cwm Ifor Primary, Cwrt Rawlin Primary, Nant-y-Parc Primary, The Twyn School and Tyn-y-Wern Primary.
The Italian Pursuit competition will begin at 1.10pm, concluding at 2.00pm before a short podium ceremony for the fastest teams, and the thrilling anticipation of the professional athletes.
The Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain will enter Caerphilly County Borough in Nelson at approximately 2pm on Wednesday 14th September.
The cyclists will then travel through Tredomen, Ystrad Mynach and Llanbradach, along Pontygwindy Road and into Caerphilly town centre, before a gruelling climb to the top of Caerphilly Mountain. They will then travel back into Caerphilly town centre, for the stage finale at Caerphilly Castle.
