Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has hit out at plans to close a police station in his constituency.
North Wales Police Force have opened a consultation on plans to rationalise their estate, saving up to £15m over the next 10 years. Towyn police station is one of four set to close if proposals get the go ahead.
Darren, who is a former member of the North Wales Police Authority, said, ‘Police stations are a highly visible police presence in communities across North Wales and can be extremely important in helping to reduce the fear of the crime for local residents – decisions to close them should not be taken lightly.
‘Towyn is an extremely busy seaside resort which sees its population boom to more than 50,000 during the busy holiday season.
‘Rather than close the station, North Wales Police Force should be increasing the scale of their operation in the area and basing more officers there.
‘I will be raising strong objections to these proposals and would encourage any concerned residents to get in touch with my office.’
Conwy County Borough Councillor for the Towyn ward, William Knightly, said ‘This is not the first time that North Wales Police have brought forward plans to close Towyn police station.
‘A proposal to close the station was originally made in 2006, but common sense prevailed and it was ditched.
‘I’ll be working with Darren to fight to keep the station open.’
