Denbighshire Trading standards team are warning residents to be aware of companies cold-calling by telephone and telling consumers that they have won a prize for free carpet cleaning.
Members of the public are warned to be aware of deceptive selling practices involving the sale of highly price vacuum cleaners. The trader will typically cold-call by phone, telling the consumer they have won a prize to have free carpet cleaning done at their home. It is reported that the caller then makes an appointment for the salesperson to call and confirms that no selling is involved.
If the appointment is accepted by the consumer they are likely to receive a demonstration of the cleaner and a high pressure sales presentation lasting about 2 hours with the intention of selling the cleaner at a cost of up to £2,500.
Consumers who agree to buy a vacuum cleaner in this way will have a seven day cooling off period during which they can change their mind and cancel the contract.
A Denbighshire Trading Standards spokesperson said: “These companies target particular areas so we would urge residents across the County to be on their guard.
“Consumers should never feel pressured to sign up to anything and if you do not remember entering a competition, it is likely that the caller is trying to deceive you.
”Salespeople trying to sell you something over the phone or on your doorstep could be anyone and you should not give out any personal information.
“Talk to family, friends or neighbours if you are unsure or worried, or contact Denbighshire Trading Standards Section at Russell House, Rhyl, on 01824 706057
