Cardiff Central Library will play host to a special St David’s Day event on March 1.
Mixing tradition, history and modern Wales, the event will include a full programme of activities including musician and storyteller Guto Dafis, Choir Cantorion Coety, chocolate making demos from Hippo Hyfryd, Welsh language taster sessions, Welsh cakes from Merched Y Wawr and a photography exhibition from Rhiwbina Camera Club featuring images of Wales.
In honour of St David, the Book of Aneirin will also be on display at the library between 3pm and 4pm. The Book of Aneirin (Llyfr Aneirin) is one of the most important books in the Welsh language and dates from around 1265. The book famously contains a long poem called ‘Y Gododdin‘. The poem is attributed to Aneirin, and is one of the oldest Welsh poems to be written.
The book is currently held in Cardiff Central Library but will shortly be deposited in the National Library of Wales for its safe keeping.
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “The St David’s Day event at Central Library is the perfect mix of celebrating Welsh history with modern Wales. I am pleased that we are also giving people the opportunity to see the book of Aneirin before it is deposited at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.”
