Transformation of New Tredegar Leisure Centre begins

Modernisation works have started to transform New Tredegar Leisure Centre into a fit-for-purpose joint use facility for youth and leisure services.

Funding for the £350,000 project, has been secured through the Welsh Assembly Government’s Fit For Purpose Grant, The Heads of the Valleys Sustainable Regeneration Fund and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Disability Equality Group.

The funding will allow for the first floor of the centre to become a dedicated youth and community area, while the ground floor will provide a modern fitness suite and improved changing rooms.

During the six months that the refurbishment works are underway, New Tredegar Leisure Centre will close temporarily. Throughout this period alternative leisure facilities can be found at Cefn Fforest, Heolddu and Rhymney leisure centre.

Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure, said, “This new and exciting development follows in the footsteps of the recent introduction of a similar joint-use facility at Aberbargoed. The Hangar Youth and Community Centre is proving to be extremely successful and is being well used by the local community, and I am confident that the facility at New Tredegar will be as well received.”

The new community, youth and leisure centre is due to re-open to the public in March 2010.
