Local school children from Abergele were joined by their Assembly Member and residents of a sheltered housing scheme to plant trees in Pentre Mawr park this week.
As part of the Eco Schools programme, 22 children from four schools attended the event, representing their school’s ‘Eco Councils’. The schools involved were Ysgol Glan Gele, Ysgol Glan Morfa, Ysgol St Elfod and Ysgol St George. They were accompanied by residents from the Clwyd Alyn Housing Association who run Pentre Mawr Housing Scheme.
The day fell during ‘Climate Change Week’ and the event was supported by Keep Wales Tidy. Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar AM and Lesley Jones, the Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy also attended the event and helped the children plant trees. Staff from the Council’s Parks department showed the children what to do and helped dig the holes for the larger trees.
Speaking after the event, Darren said:
“I was delighted to support this initiative, it was wonderful to see people of all generations working together to improve the woodland space for others to enjoy for many years to come. The oldest participant was 104 year old Mr Tim Henry, who helped to plant the biggest tree!
“Today’s tree replanting is a real example of community spirit. My congratulations to all those who turned out today to make the day such a success.”
