Enterprising pupils from Treorchy Comprehensive School have won a challenge to organise a successful fund-raising activity.
The team of Year 12 pupils organised a charity concert as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate Team Enterprise competition – and their show was chosen as the winning activity.
Pupils Nikolas Slader, Lucy Stagg, Karl Westwood and Zara Wines were the team behind the event, which raised £426 for Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor’s charities.
Judges commended them on their idea of organising a fund-raising concert because it was ‘realistic, well thought-out and achievable’. The concert was held in January, with the help of other pupils from the school, after being postponed due to snow.
Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor, Cllr Simon Lloyd, who went along to meet members of the team and receive the cheque for his charities, said: “The show drew crowds with a number of songs from well-known musicals and as well as earning the cast a standing ovation, also raised funds for my chosen charities this year, which is much appreciated.
“This is another example of how the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification is helping the youth of Rhondda Cynon Taf. Well done to the pupils who staged the show and all those who supported it.”
The Mayor’s chosen charities this year are Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Christian Lewis Trust and Rowan Tree (Formerly Cancer Support Cynon Valley).
The Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification is a Diploma which encourages students to develop the transferable skills required to take them forward into higher education or the world of work.
The qualification proves that they have developed the Key Skills considered important by employers and universities alike. It also shows that they have furthered their personal and social education, undertaken individual research, gained work experience and participated in a community project. A pass at Advanced Level is equivalent to a Grade A at A Level and awards 120 UCAS points.
