Twelve Dancers, Twelve Days and Two World Premieres

Twelve of Wales’ finest, young contemporary dancers (aged between 16 – 21 years) and drawn from all over Wales, are currently in-residence in UWIC, Cardiff preparing for what promises to be a thrilling performance at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon on Friday 30 July 2010.

The twelve members of National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW) were selected by audition earlier this year, since which time they’ve been eagerly awaiting the start of the twelve-day residency. They’re now in the midst of a gruelling schedule that covers daily technique class, creative workshops, choreography and rehearsals – all in preparation for the evening of dance in Brecon.

NYDW Artistic Director/Choreographer, Errol White, takes the energy and ideas of the young dancers and mixes them with his own, distinctive movement style. During the residency, they will create and rehearse a brand new work – so new that it doesn’t even have a title yet! It promises to be exciting, edgy and entertaining.

NYDW will be joined in performance this year by The Peer Group – a company of five young dancers, who are all former members of NYDW. Errol has worked with these professional dance artists to create the second, brand new work to receive its premiere at Theatr Brycheiniog at the end of July. The ironically-titled A State of Rest is a fast and furious piece with a pulsating, urban soundtrack.

“I hope to create a programme with NYDW that is physically engaging and exciting to watch and perform; and I’m confident that that the young dancers and I will be proud of the work we generate, rehearse and perform this summer”: Errol White, NYDW Artistic Director

Born in Hull and making a successful transition from rugby league (!), through break-dancing to contemporary dance, Errol White has performed with some of the UK’s best known contemporary dance companies including Wales’ very own Diversions – the Dance Company of Wales (now National Dance Company Wales). This is Errol’s second year with NYDW.
