Thousands of Swansea city centre visitors will now have a better shopping experience thanks to the appointment of two new city centre rangers.
The appointments of Christopher Roberts and Damien Edgell take the city centre ranger team up to five people.
The rangers are funded by Swansea Council and the Swansea Business Improvement District (BID). It’s all part of the Council’s continuing investment in the city centre.
Their duties range from customer service to referring troublemakers to the police. City centre rangers also report faults such as broken paving, discarded rubbish, vandalism and graffiti.
They cover a zone stretching to Westway and Dilwyn Street in the west and from Mansel Street to Alexandra Street and High Street in the north.
They also work as far as the River Tawe to the east and to the coastline in the south.
Additional areas of coverage include the Maritime Quarter as well as the Quadrant and Parc Tawe shopping centres.
Christopher, age 24 and from Sketty, picked up customer service skills during his time in the leisure industry.
He said: “I thoroughly enjoy patrolling the city centre, interacting with all members of the public and being available to help them solve any problems they might have. I am very excited about my future as a ranger and I will be out there making a difference by helping to make Swansea city centre an attractive and welcoming place to work and shop.”
Damien, age 26, re-joined the ranger team following a short break working for the CCTV operations in Swansea.
He has worked for Swansea Council in several roles and has a youth work and customer service-related background.
He said: “I am looking forward to re-launching the Safe Child Scheme later in the year. It’s important people of all ages feels safe whilst shopping in the city centre and this scheme will help ensure all families and visitors can enjoy a stress-free, pleasant shopping experience.”
Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The role of the city centre rangers is very important because they undertake an invaluable customer service function and are on hand to help the many thousands of visitors who come to the city centre every week.
“They also help ensure the city centre is as clean as possible and assist with the speedy referral of troublemakers onto the police. This generates a safer and more pleasant shopping experience.
“The rangers are the eyes and ears of the city centre and it’s hugely positive for the city centre that a team of five is now in place.”
