UCAC education union has declared its support for the industrial action taking place on Thursday 30 June, though UCAC itself will not be out on strike.
Elaine Edwards, UCAC’s General Secretary said “We’re one hundred per cent behind this strike. The viciousness of the Government’s attacks on public sector pensions is entirely uncalled-for. The Government’s proposals will mean a severe and immediate pay cut for staff, and will see teachers and lecturers struggling to make ends meet in their retirement.”
“People shouldn’t be fooled – this isn’t about the sustainability of the pension scheme as the Government claims. It’s about trying to find a short-term fix for the deficit created by the banking industry. It’s immoral to destroy a system that’s working well and which provides a fair pension to employees – just for the sake of political expediency.”
UCAC is about to go to ballot on taking strike action to defend pensions. The result will be announced in early September.
