University Student gets a Glimpse of Assembly life after Shadowing Labour AM

stefanieA university student from Denbighshire has been shadowing her local Assembly Member to gain an insight into the world of politics.

Stefanie Leigh-Ford, from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, has spent three Fridays with Ken Skates, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, after a previous work experience stint in Westminster.

Stefanie, 19, whose parents run The West Arms in Llanarmon DC, is currently studying at Edinburgh University. She decided to contact Mr Skates to see how the day-to-day job of an Assembly Member differs from life in the UK Government’s corridors of power.

She said: “After going to university, I soon started taking an interest in the differences between Welsh politics in comparison to England or Scotland. Shadowing Ken has helped me learn about the Welsh Assembly and what his role entails.

“I have really enjoyed my time with Ken and realised how important it is to have approachable politicians. I have also been inspired by the vibrant community spirit I have seen through accompanying him to local schools and businesses and the recent Llangollen Eisteddfod.”

Mr Skates added: “I’ve really enjoyed having Stefanie with me for the past few Fridays, and I hope she has found the experience useful and can take something from it.

“Even if she doesn’t pursue a career in politics in any way, I am glad Stefanie chose to spend some time getting an insight into my role and what I do as an elected representative.

“One of my favourite parts of the job is engaging with young people, and I believe it’s a very important aspect, so it was great to have the chance to meet Stefanie and I wish her the best of the luck in whatever she decides to do after she finishes university.”
