Update – planned refurbishment work on the Castle Meadows footbridge

Planned refurbishment work on the Castle Meadows footbridge over the River Gavenny has revealed serious structural failings leaving the bridge beyond economic repair.

As a result of the findings, and to protect public safety, the existing bridge will be removed as soon as possible. Some of the more secure supports may be re-used.

The timetable for building a replacement bridge is not yet clear as both funding and environmental consent will be required. However it is likely there will be a significant delay before it’s possible to replace the structure.

A diversion route (via Mill Street) will be signed shortly.

Monmouthshire County Council apologises for the inconvenience and will send out further updates as soon as possible.
