Upgrade for Maritime Quarter street

New surfacing and improved pavements are in store for a street in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter.

Works on enhancing the look of Adelaide Street will start next week and should be finished in early April.

The scheme is part of a series of advanced works paving the way for the boulevard project that will improve the look of a key gateway in and out of Swansea city centre between the River Tawe bridges and the LC.

The junction between Somerset Place and Adelaide Street will be closed throughout most of the works and diversions will be put in place. Motorists approaching from west Swansea who are looking to reach Adelaide Street will have to temporarily drive via Somerset Place, East Burrows Road and Cambrian Place.

Motorists leaving Adelaide Street and wanting to travel to the west can do so via Burrows Place. Motorists leaving Adelaide Street and wanting to travel to the east will have to travel via Cambrian Place, East Burrows Road and Somerset Place to reach the junction between Somerset Place and Quay Parade.

The works are aimed at further improving the access to the Museum Green area and will complement other features of the advanced works programme that will include a temporary crossing from the Salubrious Place area over to the Museum Green.

Businesses on Adelaide Street have been informed of the works.

Cllr Gareth Sullivan, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: “What this scheme will do is better the look of Adelaide Street and generate a more pleasant environment for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

“They will extend the improvements that have already been introduced in the Museum Green area and the crossing that’s planned means we’re making a real start on generating better links between the city centre and the waterfront.”

The boulevard scheme is funded by Swansea Council, an ERDF Convergence grant from the Wales European Funding Office and a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Regeneration Area (SRA) programme.

It’s one of a series of projects looking to help Swansea become a leading waterfront city under the direction of the City Centre Strategic Framework- a document that will guide the regeneration of Swansea for the next 15 to 20 years.

Other schemes will see an environmental enhancement of the Lower Oxford Street retail area and improvements to the promenade between the Civic Centre and the former observatory building on the seafront.
