Upper Bangor has been given a spruce up thanks to a Bangor Pride blitz scheme.
The aim of the blitz is to improve the look and feel of the area and Bangor Pride partners involved in the project were Gwynedd Council, the Upper Bangor Society, Bangor University, Students Union, Keep Wales Tidy and North Wales Police.
The blitz, took place shortly before Bangor University’s 125th Anniversary Celebrations, and was undertaken by Gwynedd Council’s Community Gangs and Highway Maintenance staff.
The blitz involved:
- the installation of new Tidy Towns litter bins throughout the central area,
- the repair and replacement of bollards on College Road and Glanrafon Hill,
- old sign poles and damaged signs were replaced,
- graffiti was cleaned,
- fly-posters were removed,
- pedestrian guard rails along Holyhead Road were repaired and painted.
The University also arranged the clearance of litter and fly-tipped waste from its land and the Upper Bangor Society and North Wales Police organised a litter pick in the area.
The blitz also focussed on untidy and overgrown private gardens and there was a very noticeable improvement following visits by Council Enforcement staff.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment portfolio leader, said:
“The Bangor Pride blitz shows what can be achieved by like minded people who have a common sense of pride in their community working together. The Community Gangs will be revisiting these areas on a regular basis to ensure that we stay on top of the work by carrying out those little jobs that often make a big difference.”
Councillor Keith Marshall, the local member, said: “Thanks to Bangor Pride and Tidy Towns the blitz has improved the appearance of street furniture and other amenities a great deal. Also, the collaborative approach of dealing with the untidy gardens was most innovative.”
Gwyn Hughes, the Clerk of Bangor City Council, said: “The results of the blitz are very impressive. I hope to see more and more of this type of work in Bangor City.”
