The new prime minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, is the country’s first female PM. She is also their first foreign born PM since 1923. Ms Gillard was born in Queen Street, Barry.
The Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Colin Osborne said: “We are very pleased to learn that Ms Gillard, a Barry-born woman, has become the first female prime minister of Australia – not just a prominent position in Australian politics but within global politics as well.
“I have read that Ms Gillard is proud of her Welsh roots and has expressed a desire to visit the country again over the next few years. We certainly look forward to giving her a warm welcome if she does. Congratulations, or Llongyfarchiadau as we would say in Welsh, to Julia from all in Barry – and indeed the whole of Wales.”
Cllr Janice Charles, one of two women on the council’s Cabinet, said: “Julia Gillard is a marvellous role model for girls and women in the Vale. She was born in Barry in 1961, and she and her parents were some of the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ who emigrated to Australia in 1966 as part of the assisted passage scheme. What a loss for the Vale! She is a successful woman who hasn’t been afraid to stand up to men and to break the glass ceiling.
“I can relate to Julia, as her portfolio has included both employment and workplace relations and social inclusion – so does mine. They are things that women feel particularly strongly about and we can make a real difference to people’s lives.
“As a woman in politics myself, I would encourage more women and girls to get involved in politics, both locally and nationally. I have found it both challenging and rewarding. Women have so many skills that they can offer. What we need are more women who have the aspirations and experience to make a real difference to our country and the world. Julia Gillard shows what can be achieved if you have drive and dedication – you can reach the top.
“I hope she is successful in her new role and can become an inspiration to women locally and around the world.”
