Victory parade on Tuesday to welcome home Wembley heroes

Swansea will have its chance to welcome home the Swans with an open-top bus victory parade on Tuesday night.

Barely 24 hours after securing a dream promotion to the top flight of English football, thousands of fans are expected to turn out to welcome home their Wembley heroes.

The open-top bus parade will kick off from the Swans’ historic old home at the Vetch Field at 6.30pm and will finish with a Civic Reception at the city’s Guildhall later in the evening.

Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Ioan Richard, said that after such a dramatic finale to the season the people of Swansea would turn out in their thousands to welcome the victorious team home. He said: “It’s a moment of history which I know many thousands of fans will want to share with their team. It will be remembered for years to come.”

From its starting point in Glamorgan Street next to the famous old ground, the bus will make its way to West Way. It will then move up to the junction with Kingsway and St Helen’s Road and take a left along St Helen’s Road to Guildhall.

It’s expected to take about an hour and a half to complete the journey between the Vetch and the Guildhall. Fans will be able to line the route and congregate on the rotunda in front of the Guildhall to welcome Brendan Rodgers and the team back to Swansea.

There will be road closures along the route on a rolling basis so roads can be re-opened as soon as the procession has passed to minimise inconvenience to residents and traffic. Stewards will be on hand to marshall fans and ensure their safety during the procession. St John’s Ambulance first aiders will also be on hand.

Frances Jenkins, Swansea Council’s Strategic Manager for Tourism, Marketing and Events, said: “We have pulled out all the stops to get the victory parade organised as quickly as possible and we’re sure it’s going to be a tremendous success.

“We hope everyone who comes along has a great time, but it’s also important for safety reasons that people stay behind the safety barriers and listen to any instructions they may get from the safety stewards.”
