Tomorrow (8 March) is International Women’s Day – a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
We at Welsh Icons are always pleased to celebrate diversity in all its forms and as editor I consider myself as a ‘bit of a feminist’. I always raise my hat to the more ardent ‘women’s libers’ as it always gets a reaction. In fact, as a die-hard Radio 4 fan, I probably know more about Jenny Murray’s ‘plumbing’ than her doctor.
Joking aside, International Women’s Day means much to us all. Since its inception in the early 1900’s, International Women’s Day has grown to become an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Please take a moment while thinking of your mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, to think about women in certain societies where the gathering of firewood or the collection of water is still considered to be women’s work and education is still seen as a male priveledge.
Enough now – time to do the washing-up – Happy International Women’s Day!
