WAG agrees to close Llanmorlais Primary School

The Welsh Assembly Government has agreed to close Swansea’s Llanmorlais Primary School.

It will close in August 2010 and all children currently in reception and the older year groups will be offered a place at Penclawdd Primary School.

Parents of children in the nursery, who will be moving to reception in September, are being asked to apply for a reception place at Penclawdd Primary School. This also applies if the child or children are currently in nursery at Penclawdd itself. This is standard procedure and not related to the closure of Llanmorlais.

Pupils, staff, parents and governors at the two schools have all been informed and officers from the Education Department will be working closely with the schools to help make the transition as easy as possible.

The proposal to close the school was put forward by Swansea Council as part of its Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 Programme. This looks to tackle issues such as falling rolls and poor school building conditions to ensure children continue to get access to high-quality education, the widest possible curriculum and the best available facilities in the future.

The proposal went through a comprehensive period of public consultation and statutory notice before progressing to the Welsh Assembly Government for final decision.

Cllr Mike Day, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “The number of pupils that currently attend Llanmorlais can be accommodated at Penclawdd. Officers at Swansea Council will support staff, pupils, parents and governors with the transition process and are arranging to attend both schools in the near future.

“We appreciate this will be a difficult time for pupils, staff, parents and governors affected but this decision is one that can help us maintain the quality of education available to the children currently attending both schools.”
