WAG must focus on preventative measures in bid to improve public health, says AM

National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar has called on the Welsh Assembly Government to do more to ensure preventative measures are in place to deal with Wales’ public health problems.

Speaking on Wednesday during a Welsh Conservative debate, he said: “It is very worrying to highlight the prevalence of so many public health problems in Wales.

“Such problems threaten the healthy future of our nation and, if not addressed, could potentially cripple NHS finances.

“Incessant media reports focusing on a Welsh drinking culture make for grim reading, while rising levels of obesity … childhood obesity and diabetes rates are a major cause for concern in Wales”.

The South Wales East AM added: “While I welcome any steps that have been taken to try to improve public health, the Welsh Assembly Government should target and focus resources more effectively towards preventive measures. The Assembly Government needs to do more to target early intervention.

“Information on the importance of healthy behaviour must be accessible and reach all sections of society”.
