WAG should encourage more volunteer-led language solutions for asylum seekers, says AM

Mohammad Asghar, National Assembly Member for South Wales East, has urged the Assembly Government to do more to encourage the establishment of volunteer-led language schemes for asylum seekers in Wales.

Speaking in the Senedd on Tuesday, Mr Asghar drew the First Minister’s attention to findings from the Welsh Refugee Council, highlighting the “importance of creative solutions” in the delivery of language classes.

The Shadow Minister for Heritage & Equality noted that an increase in “effective volunteer-led schemes” could help many asylum seekers gain “independence and better integrate within local communities”.

Mr Asghar also asked the First Minister for his opinion on calls from the Welsh Refugee Council for the Assembly Government to establish and develop a “language strategy for asylum seekers and refugees”.
