North Wales Assembly Member Mark Isherwood visited Shotton Job Centre after its 7th April launch of Universal Credit in Wales.
The UK Department of Work and Pensions say that their Universal Credit system is a new simpler benefit for people living on a low income, or who are out of work. It will make it easier to start a new job or work more hours, so that a claimant will be better off in a job than on benefits.
At Thursday’s launch, Mr Isherwood spoke to management and staff delivering Universal Credit from the job centre located in Connah’s Quay and gained a better understanding of the work undertaken jointly with Flintshire County Council and other local partners in preparing for the delivery of the new benefit and supporting claimants through the ‘Claimant Commitment.’
He said:
“It was particularly good to hear that support will be tailored to the individual, agreeing with customers what steps they need to take to move closer to work and that this is part of a process, not an event, with a ‘test and learn’ approach to get things right as the scheme rolls out across the UK between now and 2017.”
