Residents in Neath Port Talbot are walking their way to a healthier lifestyle and reducing their carbon footprint at the same time.
Government figures show that we jump in the car for over a fifth of journeys shorter than one mile so the Council is supporting the national ‘Walk to Work Week’ campaign which is taking place next week. (26th – 30th April)
The campaign, run by the charity ‘Living Streets’ aims to encourage people to walk to work if they live close to their workplace.
‘Your commute to work is the ideal time to take the opportunity to be more active,” says Head of Policy and Administration, Alan Bennett.
Advice being given by health experts is that walking to walk can bring huge advantages. One mile can burn 100 calories and walking two miles a day three times a week can help reduce weight by one pound every three weeks.
It can improve moods and beat stress and is good for heart and lungs. Is also combats osteoporosis, some cancers, arthritis, strokes, diabetes and depression.
Walk to Work Week recommends a daily target of 10,000 steps and anyone who makes a pledge to achieve this can be sent a free pedometer to help them reach their goal.
