Walkers get in Pole Position

A group of walkers stepped out for an invigorating Nordic Walk in the north of the County at the weekend.

Organised by Steps2Health and Age Cymru, the Newport trek was the first organised Nordic Walk of the year.

Starting from the Parrog, walkers stepped along the estuary across the Iron Bridge to Newport Beach and back  – spotting a host of birds such as Grey Herons, Curlews and Oyster Catchers along the way.

Nordic Walking, or pole walking, is a whole-body outdoor exercise suitable for all ages and abilities. It uses poles to encourage the use of the upper arms, which also help propel the walker making the walk appear easier.

However, walkers do need some tuition to learn the technique properly.

Steps2Health – with backing from Age Cymru – offer free lessons for over 50s. The next class starts in Tenby on March 20th and will run for five consecutive Saturday mornings. Further courses will be held around the County during the year.

One of the weekend’s walkers said: “I find that the poles make all the difference to my walking since I’ve had my hip replaced. I really enjoyed the walk.”

Nordic walks are held on the last Saturday of each month. They are free and open to all Nordic Walkers.
