Walkers step into pole position

Nordic walking is stepping up a gear in the County.

Steps2Health is to expand its Nordic Walking programme in Pembrokeshire.

With three newly qualified Nordic Walk leaders in the south of the County, it is now planning to offer two free Nordic Walks on the second and fourth Saturday of every month starting in the New Year.

Meanwhile next year’s celebration Nordic Walk has already been booked and will take place through Castlemartin Range West, courtesy of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the Ministry of Defence.

“Nordic Walking – or pole walking – is Europe’s fastest growing form of physical activity and a great way of staying healthy,” said Paul Morris, of Steps2Health.

“It uses poles to encourage the use of the upper arms, which also help propel the walker along, making the walk feel easier,” he said.

“But even though Nordic Walking is less tiring than normal walking, you actually burn up to 46% extra calories, meaning that greater benefit is received through less effort.”

A free hour-long Nordic Walking taster session will take place on December 5th  starting at Tenby South Beach Car Park at 10.30am. This is open to all over 50’s and will be delivered by a qualified Nordic Walking instructor.

A course of five free lessons will also be on offer to those interested in learning more. Places are limited so register early to be sure of a place.

Community Nordic walks are open to all Nordic Walkers and free training is available to the over 50’s thanks to a scheme supported by Age Cymru’s Healthy Ageing programme.

Steps2Health is a Health Challenge Pembrokeshire project made possible by funding from Sport Wales through their Let’s Walk Cymru initiative.
