As plans for this year’s Real Nappy Week get underway, Neath Port Talbot Council has teamed up with Waste Awareness Wales to encourage local parents to join the growing numbers using ‘real’ cloth nappies on babies.
Real Nappy Week is an annual event between 16th and 22nd April and aims to show how reusable nappies can help save over £500 as well as reduce waste.
The council has also joined forces with Little Lion Real Nappies, Little Lamb Real Nappies, Nature Babycare and Twf and will be handing out free nappy samples at the Aberavon shopping centre on Monday 16th April between 10am and 3pm.
Head of Service Geoff White said, “In a two and a half year period a baby will use around 5,000 nappies, costing roughly £800. Switching to real nappies can cost as little as £80. Even after adding £1 a week for an extra load of washing, you’ll still be saving over £500”.
There’s also the cost to the environment, real nappies are a great way to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Five thousand nappies are equal to 156 black bags and can weigh the same as a family car. They will take 300 years to decompose and release harmful methane gas.
Real nappies have come a long way since simple terry squares. They are easy to use and are available in many different styles and designs from a range of online retailers as well as high street stores.
