This week saw the start of the new waste and recycling collection service in Ystradgynlais. The introduction of the improved weekly recycling collections, including food waste, and fortnightly rubbish collections will help residents and the council reduce the amount of waste unnecessarily sent to landfill, increase the amount of materials recycled and minimise future costs.
However, yesterday afternoon the new vehicle that we are trialling in the area unexpectedly dislodged a power line in Tudor Street.
Cllr Ken Harris, board member for waste and sustainability, said “Thankfully, no-one was hurt in the incident, but it did result in 12 houses losing power for a couple of hours. As we had staff already on the scene, we made sure that all effected households were visited immediately and that the situation was explained to all involved.”
Consequently, with the vehicle out of action, approximately 100 households did not have their recycling collected as planned yesterday afternoon (food waste and rubbish collections were carried out).
Cllr Harris goes on to explain “Until the issue with the new vehicle is investigated and resolved, from today (Tuesday 26 October), all recycling in Ystradgynlais will be collected by a number of separate smaller vehicles.
“This ensures that the new service can go on as planned and that the recyclable material can continue to be collected and sent to be successfully recycled. By using this alternative collection method we collected the 100 missed collections from yesterday by 9am this morning.”
The rubbish collections in the wheeled bins will not be effected by these alternative arrangements and will continue to be collected weekly until 12 November on the normal day. As originally planned, there will be no rubbish (wheeled bin) collections on the week commencing 15 November and subsequent fortnights.
“We appreciate the support and co-operation shown by the residents of Ystradgynlais during the implementation of this new service and hope that by continuing to working together effectively we can continue to do our bit and increase recycling.” added Cllr Harris.
