Cardiff Central Library is to close each Wednesday, starting next week, as part of budget saving measures agreed earlier this year.
The City Council consulted on the closure of Central Library for one day in the week as part of the budget process in February and Wednesdays have emerged as the preferred option.
Since the decision was taken, the Council has been restructuring provision in the city centre facility to ensure that required savings in the region of £500,000 can be achieved this year.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “The closure of Central Library on Wednesdays will help the Council achieve a significant saving over the next year as we seek to overcome the challenges of increased service demand and reducing budgets.
“We apologise for an inconvenience caused by the Wednesday closure to members and other library users but the library service continues to be open for six days a week at locations throughout the city and we would encourage people who would normally visit Central Library on a Wednesday to make use of their local or other nearby libraries on that day.”
From the week commencing August 11, the library will close on Wednesdays. It will continue to open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays until 7pm, Fridays and Saturdays until 5.30pm. Branch library services across the city operate Monday to Saturday with each branch closing for one day in the week. Visit www.cardiff.gov.uk/libraries to find out opening times of your local branch.
