The well-known composers Gai Toms and Philip Jones are the winners of Cân i Gymru 2012 (Song for Wales) competition with the song Braf yw Cael Byw.
They win the top prize of £7,500, the Cân i Gymru trophy and the opportunity to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland.
Gai was a member of successful group Anweledig, and has also performed as a solo artist under his own name and as Mim Twm Llai. Phil is a member of the group Gwibdaith Hen Frân and the two have collaborated several times in the past.
The song Braf yw Cael Byw received the highest total of votes, combining the viewers’ phone vote and the scores from the jury – Heather Jones, Alun ‘Sbardun’ Huws, Ynyr Roberts and Lisa Jên Brown.
Gai performed the song in the grand final which was broadcast live on S4C on Sunday 4 March.
Over 120 entries were received for this year’s competition with eight selected to compete in the final. All eight final songs are now available to download on iTunes.
In second place, and receiving a prize of £2,000, is Rhydian Pugh with the song Cynnal y Fflam, and in third place, with the prize of £1,000 is Nia Davies Williams and Sian Owen with the song Cain.
Elin Fflur and Dafydd Du presented the evening of entertainment live from Pafiliwn Bont, Pontrhydfendigaid.
