Swansea University students will be running out onto the Twickenham Stoop ground pitch in force this weekend when the Welsh students RFU squad take on their English counterparts in a Six Nations pre-match clash.
The Welsh students V English students match takes place on Friday 24th February at 5pm. The game will be shown live on www.unisportonline.co.uk on Friday.
Swansea University students excelled in the extensive selection nomination and trail process with the result that three players have made the team and another three have made it on to the subs bench – with last years Varsity Man of the Match Tom Rowlands starting at number 9.
Richard Lancaster, Swansea University coach said: “ We are really pleased that so many players from our first team have been selected for representational honours and this again highlights the high standard of rugby at the University and the development players undergo whilst here.
“The Welsh Students team has been a welcomed addition to the national tiers this year and I hope it develops to have a full international fixture list in years to come.
“Reuben Tucker has already been selected for the Wales Under 20s this year and Richard Smith has been with the Welsh 7s team and it is encouraging we now have players representing the University who are gaining honours at all levels.”
The Six Nations experience and training will help Swansea University players in their preparation for the forthcoming Welsh Varsity match.
This years Varsity match takes place on 2nd May 2012. Tickets are now on sale – for more information go to www.swansea-union.co.uk. The Welsh Varsity takes place every year between Swansea University and Cardiff University. Over 25 events to find the deserving winner of the Varsity Shield take place over the course of a week. The centrepiece rugby “head-to-head” match takes place on the Wednesday evening in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Over 14,500 spectators attended last years match.
Other sports represented include hockey, squash, badminton, lacrosse, rowing, golf, basketball, football, netball, fencing and an array of other sports including martial arts. This is a fundraising event with proceeds going to a number of worthy causes.
