Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed a range of projects introduced by the Welsh Government to help support credit unions.
A funding boost of over £1.2 million is to be granted to national and local schemes across Wales.
The funding will contribute to publicity campaigns, money management education, as well as the development of financial services.
It follows on from recent Welsh Government calls challenging credit unions to provide additional financial services and products to meet the needs of customers.
Funding is being allocated to several projects all over Wales. One such project will see the North Wales Credit Union spending almost £680,000 managing a national marketing campaign to help increase awareness and membership of credit unions.
The Wrexham branch of North Wales Credit Union (NWCU) is located in King Street and provides a wide range of practical, affordable and straightforward financial services.
Ms Griffiths said:
“Credit unions often provide a safe and secure lifeline to individuals who find themselves unable to borrow from the mainstream lenders.”
“The Welsh Government is keen for credit unions to develop further by offering a wider range of financial services and providing help and guidance for middle and low income earners across Wales.”
“This latest investment demonstrates the Welsh Government’s desire for the sector to grow and for credit unions to be an easily accessible, effective and affordable financial service for Welsh citizens.”
